Course content
The course aims to cover the following topics, however, the exact order and content may change on the basis of the requests and needs of the students. - Register and style in thesis writing: Academic English - Choosing a topic - Research questions and thesis statements - Finding (and evaluating) sources - Reading academic sources effectively - The structure of the bachelor's thesis - Documenting sources: Direct quotes, summaries and paraphrases; Avoiding plagiarism - Citation styles and citation managers - Using AI in academic writing

Learning outcomes
This course focuses on the academic style of English and the fundamentals of applied research. Students familiarize themselves with the principles of creating academic texts and the standard sequence of research, with special emphasis on their ability to choose a topic, identify problems, formulate research questions, search for available information, choose from methods of empirical research, select and interpret relevant results. In addition, students will acquire the skills needed for reading academic literature, which will help them understand, analyse and critically evaluate various sources. The course is also aimed as preparation for writing bachelor's theses.
Students will be able to write a logically structured, reasonably supported and stylistically correct academic essay. They will also learn to choose and evaluate academic sources and use full-text and bibliographic databases.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay, Presentation of student research activity, Test

The course ends with a credit. You will be evaluated on the basis of the following components: - attendance - active participation in seminars - 3 home assignments (annotated bibliography, essay outline, final essay) Students can obtain 40 points in the course: 5 points for the annotated bibliography, 5 points for the essay outline and 30 points for the final essay. In order to pass the course, one needs to get at least 15 points on the final essay, and at least 28 points altogether. All assignments can be resubmitted once.
