Topics to be covered in the seminars: 1. Children's Literature: Basic Characteristics, Types, Genres. The Beginnings of Children's Literature. The Conceptualization of the Child. 2. 18th Century Prose: Mary Wollstonecraft, Sarah Fielding, Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift. 3. 19th Century Prose and Poetry: Charles Dickens, Charles Kingsley, J. M. Barrie; nonsense poetry - L. Carrol, limericks - E. Lear. 4. Animals in 19th Century Literature: R. Kipling, A. Sewell, J. London. 5. The Place of Fairy Tales in Children's Literature: O. Wilde, J. Newberry, Mother Goose. 6. 20th Century Literature for the Youngest: A. A. Milne, B. Potter, K. Grahame. 7. Women and Children's Literature: Edith Nesbit, Frances Hodgson Burnett, P. L. Travers J. K. Rowling.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on children's literature of the Anglophone world, including its historical development and contemporary situation. Theoretically oriented lessons discuss key works in the context of their period, while practical ones are devoted to detailed analyses of selected texts and how they can be used in the EFL classroom. The course is main emphasis is on analyzing a wide variety of literary works, providing students with a basic overview of the diversity of children's literature.
