14 týdnů výuky předmětu je rozloženo do 10 přednášek a 12 seminářů, přičemž některé z nich přesahují časový rámec jednoho výukového týdne. Každý týden semestru se koná jedna 90minutová přednáška a jeden 90minutový seminář, jejichž témata jsou následující: Přednášky: 1. Pre-history; First Peoples; The First European Attempts to Settle on the Continent; Explorers 2. New France; Canada as a British Colony amongst European Colonial Aspirations, and in the Context of Colonisation of the Americas 3. From the War of 1812 to the Rebellions of 1837-38 4. From the Foundation of Confederation until World War II 5. Canada in the Post-WWII World, International Position of the Country, Peacekeeping Initiatives and Other Middle-Power 'Diplomatic Niches' 6. From Cold War to Current Social, Cultural, Linguistic and Other Tendencies in Canadian Society 7. Canadian Bilingualism: The Phenomenon, Its History, Laws, Practical Implications 8. From World War II to the Swinging Sixties, Quiet Revolution and the Making of the Modern Québec 9. From the Revolt and Protest in the 1960s and 70s to the Return to Conservatism in the 1980s 10. Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall to 'the Trudeau (>>> Carney) Years' Semináře: 1. Life in the Wilderness: From Memoirs to Fiction 2. Construction of Canadian National Identity 3. Canadian Essay-Writing Tradition in the 19th and the 20th Centuries 4. Encounters of 'The Other': Coexistence of French- and English-Canadians in the 19th Century 5. Encounters of 'The Other': Coexistence of French- and English-Canadians in the 20th Century 6. Canadian 'Regionalized' Modernism 7. Canadian Literary Regionalism 8. Experimental Literature 9. Canadian Fiction from the 1960s to Present 10. Canadian Suburban Novel from 1960s till the 2020s 11. Margaret Atwood as a Dominant Canadian Author and an International Literary Phenomenon 12. Indigenous and Foreign-Born Voices in Contemporary Canadian Fiction N.B.: Some lectures and seminars do not cover the same time period although they happen in the same week. N.B. II: Main periods of history, literature, culture, etc. are covered in lectures and seminars, but additional ("guided") self-study will be required at times to complete the information given in person. Please also note that some themes overlap on the historical timeline with others. It is thus up to students to organize their notes in such a way that they find convenient.

Výstupy z učení
|
Kurz slouží jako úvod do historie a kultury Kanady. Přednášky se zaměřují na seznámení s politickými, kulturními, náboženskými a ekonomickými souvislostmi klíčových historických událostí, které formovaly kanadské dějiny. Studenti tohoto kurzu budou mít komplexní znalosti kanadských dějin. Tento historický přehled bude doplněn obsahem seminářů, které se budou zabývat konkrétními texty a dokumenty vztahujícími se k daným obdobím, které dále ilustrují historické souvislosti nabízené především přednáškami.

Students are required to do any and all of the following before each of the lectures and seminars: - come prepared to both lectures and seminars; - for lectures, students will need to know the contents of the PowerPoint presentation available in the elearning course in advance; - for seminars, students will need to have read the assigned texts or their excerpts, reflected on them as well as the questions and on the "food for thought" impetuses, as well as all tasks required to be completed before the seminar (or lecture)
