Course content

Lectures: <ol> <li> Introduction - cell organization (prokaryotic, eukaryotic). </li> <li> Biological membrane (structure, function). </li> <li> Cell mobility, cell cytoskeleton (microtubules, actin filaments, intermediate filaments). </li> <li> Extracellular matter (structure, function). </li> <li> Cell interactions (cell-cell, cell-extracellular matter). </li> <li> Cell nucleus (anatomy, function, organization of genetic information). </li> <li> Gene expression, cell signaling. </li> <li> Transport proteins. </li> <li> Energy metabolism (oxidative phosphorylation, ATP, basic metabolic pathways). </li> <li> Cell cycle (proliferation, differentiation). </li> <li> Cell death (necrosis, apoptosis). </li> <li> Types of tissues and their functions. </li> <li> Interaction of cells with (bio) materials. </li> <li> Tissue cultures (in vitro testing, cell visualization). </li> </ol> Seminars: Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge gained during lectures and study of recommended literature.

Learning outcomes
|
The subject will provide students with extended information concerning cell biology and tissue biology. The course follows the Introduction to Cell and Tissue Biology. Lectures and practical laboratory exercises will discuss principles related to the structure and function of cells and cell parts, integration of cells into tissues, intercellular communication and interactions within the structure of tissues incl. cell interaction with biomaterials. Furthermore, students will be acquainted with the principles of methods used in cell biology and in-vitro testing incl. material testing. Learning outcomes of the course unit The subject will provide information that is necessary for the student's science base and understanding of the education in the following subjects. Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge gained during lectures and study of recommended literature.
