Course content
Lectures: 1/ The First Industrial Revolution and its consequences for the development of applied arts. 2/ Historicizing styles, World Fairs, the influence of Henry Cole and Gottfried Semper, and the founding of applied arts museums and schools in Central Europe. 3/ Owen Jones and the art of ornament. 4/ Christopher Dresser, the Aesthetic Movement, and its influence on global design. 4/ Japanese influences on European art and art in our country. 5/ The Arts and Crafts movement in Europe and in our territory. 6/ French Art Nouveau and its response in Central Europe. 7/ Ch. R. Mackintosh and the Vienna Secession. 8/ The Werkbund and the German revival movement in design before World War I. 9/ Czech specifics in the revival of crafts and design in the first third of the 20th century. 10/ The origins of Modernism and the De Stijl movement. 11/ Bauhaus and its Czech echoes. 12/ Foundations of the Scandinavian design school. 13/ Art Deco and Paris 1925. 14/ Art and War: The stigmata of war and wartime design.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments), Seminár, Students' self-study
  • Semestral paper - 30 hours per semester
  • Presentation preparation (report) - 10 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
Applied Arts and Design in the Context of International Development and Contemporary Trends in Art from the Mid-19th Century to the Present (Especially in the Fields of Glass, Jewelry, Costume Jewelry, Textile Art, Ceramics and Porcelain, Applied Graphics, Photography, Contemporary Studio Art, and Design).

Knowledge of the subject matter of History of Art and Clothing Culture (KDE/DOV1,2).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Presentation of acquired knowledge via paper

Credit: participation in seminars, elaboration of an essay on a given topic. Exam: oral, defense of semestral work.
