Course content
1. Introduction to the Legal Framework of Waste Management: basic terms and definitions, significance and objectives of waste management 2. National Waste Management Legislation: overview of key laws and regulations (e.g., the Waste Act, the Packaging Act), roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders (state administration, municipalities, businesses) 3. European Waste Management Legislation: EU directives and regulations (e.g., the Waste Framework Directive, the Landfill Directive), implementation of EU law into national legislation 4. International Treaties and Agreements: the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent Procedures for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade 5. Integrated Approach to Waste Management: waste management hierarchy, waste prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, landfilling 6. Economic Instruments in Waste Management: fees and taxes, extended producer responsibility (EPR) systems, subsidies and support for sustainable waste management 7. Role of Innovation and Technology: new technologies and their legislative support, best practices and examples of successful projects 8. Legislative Control and Enforcement: control mechanisms and sanctions, the role of inspections and other supervisory authorities 9. Future Challenges and Trends in Waste Management Legislation

Learning outcomes
Students will be able to explain the basic principles and objectives of national, European, and international legislation in the field of waste management. They will analyze and interpret key legal regulations and their impacts on various stakeholders in waste management. They will apply the acquired knowledge when addressing specific problems and case studies in the field of waste management. They will critically evaluate current legislation and propose improvements with respect to the principles of sustainability and the circular economy. Students will identify current technological innovations in waste management and discuss their legal support. They will be able to discuss the ethical and social aspects of waste management legislation, including impacts on communities and the environment. Students will gain an overview of international treaties and agreements in the field of waste management and understand their significance and implementation at the national level. They will be able to prepare legal analyses and opinions related to waste management and propose practical solutions in accordance with applicable legislation.

Active participation in classes Completion of a case study as a requirement for receiving credit. Written exam verifying knowledge of the entire subject matter. Active engagement in discussions, work with legal regulations, and study of professional literature. Independent study of course materials and preparation for classes.
