Course content
Students are acquainted with principles of work safety, basic laboratory equipment and basic and advanced experimental procedures (microwave/hydrothermal synthesis, self-combustion, sonochemistry). 1. Safety in a chemical laboratory. 2. Dependence of salt solubility on temperature. Dependence of reaction rate on temperature and concentration. 3. Preparation of salts by neutralization. Redox processes, reduction of copper salts. 4. Reaction of sulfur compounds. Acidobasic properties, evidence and reaction of H3BO3. 5. Preparation of salt hydrates. Determination of crystal water. 6. Determination of the relative atomic mass of the metal. 7. Reactions and evidence of inorganic cations. 8. Reactions and evidence of inorganic anions. 9. Preparation of complexes, [Cu(NH3)4]O4.H2O. 10. Preparation and properties of precious metal nanoparticles. Self-combustion synthesis of ferrites and oxides of heavy metals. 11--14. Custom preparation and characterization of the given compound (organic-inorganic compounds, ferrites).

  • Preparation for laboratory testing; outcome analysis - 24 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
Master: Preparation reactions, simple and complex. Separation of reaction products (crystallization, filtration, distillation, extraction etc). Determination of the composition and properties of compounds. Purification of solids. The emphasis is directed towards methodically correct and safe process, leading to both qualitatively and quantitatively best results, and towards the ability to apply theoretical knowledge for explanation of the observed phenomena.
Learning outcomes Learners can prepare inorganic compounds according to instructions, use appropriate laboratory techniques, including good laboratory practice. Learners are able to design and implement the preparation of a more complex inorganic compound based on literature searches, accurately record and analyse experimental results. Learners are able to communicate the results of scientific work clearly in oral, written and electronic formats. Learners understand the principles of safe handling of chemicals and therefore work safely in the laboratory.
