Within the course, the PhD student will deepen the knowledge of the physical properties of melts, hydraulic laws of melt flow through the flow system and filling of the mould cavity, the theory of melting and solidification of metals, homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation and solidification of castings, energy and mass transfer, the theory of stagnation, solidification processes, melt filtration. The study also focuses on the formation of structure and strength properties of metal during solidification and subsequent cooling, the change in the proportion of plastic and elastic deformation, the theory of the formation of cracks and crazing in the casting, the formation of internal stresses and the causes of deformation of castings. The course also introduces students to the theoretical nature of thermal processes in the casting-mould system and characterises thermal processes in foundry moulds (Stefan-Boltzmann law, Fourier heat conduction equation, Newton's law and heat transfer theory). Individual foundry technologies will be studied in terms of the influence of the casting material and technological conditions on the quality of castings (evaluation and analysis of the causes of defects). An integral part of this course will be the prediction of defects based on simulation calculations. Attention will be paid to the basic principles of the finite element method, limiting factors of the calculation, the influence of the choice of mesh parameters and boundary conditions on the speed and accuracy of the calculation, the importance of thermo-physical variables and process parameters for the calculation and their interdependence, input data for casting simulation, database of material and thermo-physical properties, preparation of the model for casting simulation, interpretation of simulation results and evaluation of important criteria for casting quality.
