Course content
1.Electrodynamics of continuous media, Maxwell's equations in solids, permittivity and permeability of materials, the polarization of electromagnetic waves, Maxwell's equations at the interface ofmedia. 2. The propagation of electromagnetic waves in solids, reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves, Snell's law. 3. Phase phenomena at the interface of materials and vacuum generalized Snell's law, plasmons, and the evanescent waves. 4. Electro-optical metamaterials, electromagnetic cloaking and optical super-lens. 5. Acoustic systems with lumped and distributed parameters, macroscopic and microscopic acoustic parameters 6. Passive and active acoustic metamaterials and metasurfacessuppressing the transmission of noise and vibrations. 7. Methods for the design of metamaterials, modern methods for the optimization of complex mechatronic systems using genetic algorithms. Tutorials: At each tutorial, the material explained at the previous lecture will be discussedand further developed on practical and concrete examples. In the middle and at the end of the semester, a test of the subjectis scheduled.

Learning outcomes
The course "metamaterials" aims to give an overview of the fundamentsl principles of electromagnetic, optical and acoustic metamaterials. The main objective of the course is to demonstrate modern creative approaches to the design of mechatronic systems and their optimization.
Students get an overview of the basic principles of electromagnetic, optical and acoustic metamaterials and acquire modern creative approaches to the design of mechatronic systems and their optimization.
