The course introduces the students into experimental methods in the mechanics of elastic bodies, namely strain gauge measurements and optical methods in deformation measurements. Through laboratory experiments, the students learn to apply these methods in practical situations of structures loaded by various stresses, to perform data acquisition, process the results and write a measurement report. Instead of using pre-built setups and data acquisition systems, the students realize a self-made measurement chain, beginning with transducer installation and ending by creating a simple measurement software. The laboratory experiments are supplemented by lectures from relevant parts of linear elasticity and excursions to research and development labs.
The course allows to obtain basic insight in the field of the experimental methods in mechanics of elastic bodies and to acquire practical experience with deformation measurements. The students master selected parts of the linear elasticity, and learn to install the transducers, set up a simple measurement chain, acquire and log the data and write a measurement report.
