Cílem kurzu je uvést studenty do studia britské kultury. Studenti získají obecný chronologický přehled historických a kulturních období. Zároveň budou seznámeni s některými filozofickými nebo uměleckými školami a nejdůležitějšími uměleckými a literárními díly jednotlivých period vždy v kontextu obecných evropských trendů.

Description: Lectures: The content of the lectures is split into two forms. Compulsory reading from a textbook and pre-recorded videos (available on the e-learning server) provide an overview of British history and cultural history. Face-to-face seminars cover the literary history of the British Isles through the discussion of a selection of texts from British literature. Requirements: Pre-recorded Lectures: Two written tests based on the content of the online lectures and the assigned reading from the course textbook. These tests are written in class, combining multiple choice questions, open-ended questions and problem-based exercises. A mock test showing the format of the written tests, as well as an interactive question bank helping students to prepare for the test is provided. Seminars: Attendance is obligatory. One unexcused absence is allowed. Thorough familiarity of compulsory reading and active participation in class work is a prerequisite for a successful completion of the course. Students write a mid-term and an end-term test in class and take an oral exam. The tests and the exam test their knowledge of the compulsory texts and their broader context; the students' language skills are also assessed. The course has its e-learning course with links to the video recordings of the lectures, with compulsory readings for both the lecture and the seminar, with an interactive question bank and with feedback from the various tests. It is not possible to pass the course without enrollment in the e-learning course and perusal of the materials available there. Credits: The credit in the lecture part of the course is awarded on two conditions: 1) at least 70% score on average in the lecture tests; 2) active participation and regular attendance in the seminars. Only students who have successfully completed all of the seminar requirements (attendance, active participation, sufficient score in the mid-term and end-term test) and have earned their credit from the lectures may enroll for the oral exam with their seminar teacher. The average of the lecture tests can be raised by 10% through various extracurricular activities (e.g. participation in organized theater outings, poem recital, participation in public lectures). |
