Course content
Week 1: Prepositions Week 2: Pronouns Week 3: Verbs in general: classification of verbs, morphological categories of verbs, the structure of a verb phrase (finite, non-finite, simple, complex). Week 4: Primary verbs: do, have, be. Week 5: Modality in Czech and English, deontic and epistemic modality, modal verbs: can, could, may, might. Week 6: Modal verbs: must, should, will, would, shall marginal modals: ought to, need, dare, used to. s. Week 7: TEST 1. Consolidation. Week 8: Transitive/intransitive verbs, the passive. Week 9: Non-finite verb phrases: infinitive (bare/ to-infinitive), gerund, present and past participle Week 10: The infinitive and the -ing form Week 11: Present and past tenses Week 12: Expressing the future Week 13: Phrasal verbs Week 14: TEST 2. Exam preparation The extent of the face-to-face instruction: 9 lessons/semester In the part-time study the content of the course will be the same in full-time study. Jedná se o předmět staré akreditace a přímo v předmětu MO2BE již nebude nabízena pravidelná výuka. Studenti mají dvě možnosti: buď absolvovat předmět v zimním semestru formou několika společných online konzultací (+ samozřejmě osobních konzultací, které se pravidelně nabízí všem studentům), nebo mohou předmět absolvovat v letním semestru v rámci předmětu LI2BE, který předmět MO2BE v nové akreditaci nahradil.

Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments)
  • Class attendance - 28 hours per semester
  • Home preparation for classes - 50 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 42 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The aim of the subject is the exploration of verbs and verb tenses in all their forms and functions. Students get acquainted with verb inflexion, auxiliary verbs, modal verbs, lexical verbs and their semantic-syntactic classification, and verb categories - mainly tense and voice. Verb tenses are compared and contrasted. Students are led to be able to approach grammatical issues both inductively and deductively. Individual items are contrasted with Czech and form-function relation is emphasized.
Detailed knowledge of English verbs and their morphological categories with focus on modal verbs and the use of tenses.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined examination

The course is finished with an exam. To be able to sit for the exam, students have to obtain a credit. In order to get a credit, students are supposed to: - Achieve at least 70% of total points obtainable from tests and assignments. There will be 2 tests during the semester. If a valid excuse [before the test] can be provided, the student will be given another chance. Otherwise it will be considered a fail. A resit will be offered to those who have achieved at least 55 % of the total points obtainable from tests. - Participate actively during seminars and not to miss more than two - Register for the course in Moodle
