Course content
|
What is language, general features, classification of languages, roots of English, Old English, Middle English, Great Vowel Shift, Early Modern English, the development of writing, English today.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments)

Learning outcomes
|
The course focuses on basic notions connected with language changes and the phases of the development of the English language. Students have an opportunity to read extracts from various periods of the language development and compare similarities and differences between the oldest texts and present-day ones.
The knowledge of the gradual change of the English language and the historical events which influenced it.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student's performance analysis, Systematické pozorování studenta, Written assignment
Attendance, (in-class) presentation, home assignments, final test: 70% - assignments & quizzes (submitted on time) 10% - attendance: full-timers are allowed to miss (for whatever reason) two seminars; part-timers: one. 20% - presentation: (written or oral) on a chosen topic. Students should collect at least 70% of points in order to get the credit. Should they have less than 70% of points, they will be allowed to take a test covering the material discussed during the entire course. No retake will be arranged.
