Course content
Lectures: 1. Introduction to the course - basic concepts and principles, the history of nature conservation in the Czech Republic and worldwide. 2. Biodiversity and the threats to it, diversity at the level of species, communities and ecosystems, genetic diversity, causes of extinction, habitat degradation and fragmentation, problems facing small populations, 3. The legal framework for nature conservation - an overview of Czech and European legislation, nature conservation authorities in the Czech Republic 4. General nature conservation - protection of woody plants, memorable trees, protection of the non-living natural environment; issues relating to non-native species 5. Landscape conservation - the importance of spatial planning for nature and landscape conservation, landscape connectivity and migration corridors, significant landscape features and their conservation, the Ecological Network (ÚSES), conservation of landscape character, nature parks 6. Protection at the species and population level - basic concepts, causes of threat and solutions - ex situ and in situ conservation, the role of zoos and botanical gardens, monitoring and analysis of population viability, species protection under Czech and European law and international agreements on species protection, CITES 7. Specially protected animal species in the Czech Republic - categorisation, examples of specially protected animal species - their threats and management, rescue programmes, conservation programmes, regional action plans 8. Specially protected plant species in the Czech Republic - categorisation, examples of specially protected plant species - threats to them and their management, conservation programmes, management plans, regional action plans 9. Conservation at the community and ecosystem levels - principles of territorial conservation, types of habitats and the threats they face, protected areas and their categorisation, management plans, management of protected areas and monitoring of management effectiveness, public engagement in protected areas, small-scale specially protected areas - examples 10. Large-scale specially protected areas in the Czech Republic - characteristics of the 4 national parks in the Czech Republic. Large-scale specially protected areas in the Czech Republic - characteristics of protected landscape areas in the Czech Republic 11. Ecological networks within Europe - Natura 2000 - examples 12. Special Protection Areas and Sites of Community Importance in the Czech Republic 13. International approaches to nature conservation and sustainable development - international organisations, international agreements on nature conservation, nature conservation standards (IUCN), the concept of nature conservation in other countries - examples of good practice 14. The role of nature conservation in society - nature conservation versus landscape management, environmental impact assessment (EIA and biological assessment), economic instruments in nature conservation, state organisations involved in nature conservation and the role of the voluntary sector, the role of education and environmental education, the role of scientific institutions. Practical sessions: 1. Introduction, assessment criteria, and assignment of the term paper. 2. - 11. Block field trips focusing on examples of the principles of species and ecosystem conservation and their management in protected areas in the Liberec Region. 12. - 14. Presentation of the term paper.

Learning outcomes
The course aims to familiarize students with both the basic biological principles of nature conservation and the application of these principles in practical nature conservation at the species and ecosystem levels. It introduces the basic legislative framework and possibilities for institutional nature conservation in the Czech Republic, the European Community, and in an international context. It focuses on both general and, above all, specific species and territorial protection in our country. It presents the process of setting up the management of specially protected species and areas, as well as economic and other nature conservation tools.

Written exam, Oral presentation of self-study

Credit for attendance at seminars (minimum 70 per cent) and the presentation of the term paper. Written examination.
