Course content
1. Brief history of general biology. 2. Chemical composition of the cell. 3. Cellular and non-cellular systems - viruses, prions, prokaryotic cell. 4. Eukaryotic cell - organelles and their functions, endosymbiotic theory. 5. Molecular basis of heredity (replication, transcription, translation). 6. Transport of substances across membranes. 7. Intercommunication between cells. 8. Metabolism of the cell, classification of organisms according to type of metabolism. 9. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis. 10. General genetics and Mendel's laws. 11. Cytogenetics (mitosis, meiosis, cell cycle). 12. Basics of taxonomy and principles of nomenclature. 13. Principles of ecology. Laboratory exercises are related to the chapters presented.

Learning outcomes
Learn the basics of taxonomy and principles of nomenclature. Chemical composition of the cell.Viruses and prions. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Cell metabolism and cell division. Communication between cells. Heredity and variability - Mendel's laws, genetic information, replication, transcription and translation. Basic concepts in ecology.
Theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field.
Prerequisites
knowledge of high school biology

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined examination, Test

Active participation in laboratory exercises, elaboration of laboratory protocols, 2 written tests per semester, the result of which will be included in the final mark from the subject.
