Course content
Lectures: Introduction to biotechnology (history, modern and traditional biotechnology). Basic terms (biomass, bioprocesses / fermentation, genetics and biotechnology, enzyme catalysis, microbial / plant / animal biotechnology). Biotechnology in medicine Genetic engineering (Genes, genomes, genomics, gene manipulation, cloning), Tissue cultures (stem cells, embryonic stem cells, stem cell therapy), Production of recombinant proteins, antibiotics, Production of vaccines, antibodies, Diagnostics, gene therapy. Biotechnology in food industry. Genetically modified organisms. Environmental biotechnology, Bioremediation (water, soil, waste). Biotechnology safety, Bioterrorism, Ethical problems in biotechnology. Exercises: Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge gained during lectures and study of recommended literature.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of modern biotechnologies. In accordance with the definition of ?Biotechnology is any technology that uses biological systems, living organisms or parts thereof to produce or convert them or other specific uses.? modified organisms, and remediation of polluted soils and waters and bioterrorism.
