Course content
Lectures: 1. History, basic terms, basics of nomenclature (systematic names, group, trivial). Conditions of macromolecule formation, principles of chain polyreactions and stepwise polymerizations. 2. Chain polymerization: kinetic conditions, radical polymerization, ionic polymerization, cyclic compound polymerization, coordination polymerization, technically important polymers. 3. Staged polyreactions, polyadditions, polycondensation, technically important polymers. 4. Structure of isolated macromolecules (constitution, conformation, configuration). 5. Super-molecular structure of macromolecules (non-bonding interactions, gaussian ball, amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers). 6. Molecular weight of polymers, methods of determination. 7. Thermal behavior of polymers (amorphous, semicrystalline polymers). 8. Copolymers, copolymerization, technically important copolymers. 9. Structure-properties relationship, polymeric materials (plastics, fibers, adhesives, gels, elastomers). 10. Crosslinking of polymers (physical and chemical, elastomers). 11. Hydrogels (structure, function). 12. Degradation of polymers (mechanism, degradable polymers). 13. Biopolymers: polysaccharides, proteins. 14. Summary of the curriculum. Seminars: Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge gained during lectures and study of recommended literature.

Learning outcomes
TThe course aims to acquaint students with the basics of macromolecular chemistry. Students will be acquainted with polymerization reactions leading to the formation of polymers, with the hierarchical structure of polymers in order to understand the principles of polymer behavior depending on their structure. The issue is discussed on examples that include common and special polymers, even in connection with polymers that are used for the production of nanomaterials and materials for medicine. Part of the lectures is devoted to biopolymers. Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge acquired during lectures and study of recommended literature.

Combined examination, Written assignment

Credit: Laboratory exercise 100% attendance, elaboration of protocols. Combined exam, oral and written part.
