Course content
Lectures: 1. Basic classification of drugs and their carriers, EU and FDA regulation, clinical and preclinical tests, requirements for clean rooms. 2. Methods of drug administration: oral, transdermal, intravenous, etc. Basic technology of drug carrier preparation. 3. Controlled drug release, basic requirements and methods. 4. Polymers used in pharmacy, water-soluble. 5. Biodegradable and hydrophobic polymers for drug carriers. 6. Membrane penetration - fundamentals of diffusion, Transport, mass transfer. 7. Diffusion in biological systems. 8. Basics of pharmacokinetics - burts release, pH. 9. Basics of pharmacokinetics - coffe ring effect, long term release. 10. Solvents - classification, purity classes, enthalpy of evaporation, residual solvents. 11. Fundamentals of nanochemistry - micelles, dendrimers, colloidal particles, nanoparticles. 12. Electrospinning and electrospraying for preparation of drug carriers. 13. Wound covers - requirements, used polymers, types of wounds. 14. Hydrogels as drug carriers. Seminars: Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of knowledge gained during lectures and study of recommended literature. The subject of laboratory exercises will be preparation of materials containing active substance (dye) of various concentrations, study of kinetics of release spectrometrically, enthalpy of evaporation of solvents, basics of work with hazardous substances.

Learning outcomes
In this course, students will learn the basics of pharmacology, requirements for drug carriers, their preparation, distribution and the basics of the approval process. Further knowledge of pharmacokinetics, preparation and evaluation of materials for drug carriers, especially for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine will be developed.

Credit: Laboratory exercise 100% attendance, elaboration of protocols. Oral exam.
