Course content
Lectures (topics): 1. Introduction to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (basic principles and concepts) 2. Materials for tissue engineering (extracellular matter, biomaterials, biomimetic materials...) 3. Cells in tissue engineering (stem cells, cell differentiation) 4. Biologically active substances in tissue engineering (growth factors, enzymes, antibodies, antibiotics...) 5. Modern biotechnology (genetic engineering, GMO, biotechnology safety) 6. Degradation behavior of materials (degradation mechanism, degradable materials, degradation evaluation) 7. Interaction of materials with proteins (mechanism of protein adsorption, protein corona) 8. In vitro evaluation of materials (cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, cell-material interactions, in-vitro models, bioreactors) 9. In vivo evaluation of materials (in vivo models) 10. Wound healing and skin replacements 11. Regeneration of nervous tissue 12. Tissue engineering of bone and cartilage 13. Surgical sutures 14. Legislation of medical devices Exercises: Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge acquired during lectures and study of recommended literature. As part of the exercise, tests of materials with different structures will be performed: tests for biodegradability, protein adsorption and in-vitro tests of biocompatibility (cytotoxicity, cell adhesion, viability and proliferation).

Learning outcomes
The course aims to acquaint students with current knowledge and trends in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Students will be introduced to the issue, acquainted with key topics of tissue engineering (materials suitable for use in TE, cells and their role, biologically active substances, evaluation of materials). Subsequently, these principles will be discussed on selected tissues: wound healing and skin replacement, nerve tissue regeneration, bone replacement and cartilage replacement, surgical sutures. The course also includes a lecture on the legislation of medical devices and the basics of modern biotechnology. The course is complemented by the concurrently taught course KCH/MTN "Materials for Tissue Carriers". Laboratory exercises are focused on practical exercises and verification of students' knowledge acquired during lectures and study of recommended literature.
