The lectures introduce the students to the elementary concepts and notions of linguistics including its socio-, psycho-, pragma-, ethno- etc. branches. Key topics: The essence of language and communication, the concept of a language sign and its variations, language competence vs. communicative competence, major theoretical schools in linguistics.
