Course content
History of the Middle East until the rise of the Ottoman Empire History of the Middle East during the existence of the Ottoman Empire Mandates and the problematice of Middle Eastern borders and boundaries Decolonization and Cold War in the Middle East¨ Actual political development in the Middle East Cultural geography of the Middle East Religious geography of the Middle East International conflicts in contemporary Middle East Civil conflicts in contemporary Middle East¨ Terrorist activities in the Middle East Middle Eastern minorities and identities Human rights, democratization and related issues Middle East in broader geopolitical perspective

Learning outcomes
Students discuss current political-geography issues of contemporary Middle East based on reading. The course will address the issues of colonialism and its impact on modern Middle Eastern states in terms of border issues, political and economic systems. Students will understand the most important sources of conflicts in contemporary Middle East, human rights violation as well as problems of underdevelopment. All these topics will be discussed in broader geopolitical context with special focus on the role of the powers in the region as well as global powers.
