Course content
Thematic areas: The city of Liberec and the Liberec region from the perspective of geography, regions and using map studies. The mountainous environment of Czechia as significant conditions for the natural and social environment. Settlement and settlements of the Czech lands. Relief, its shapes and protection in Czechia. Regionalisation of Czechia as an approach to understanding natural and social inequalities: division of Czech society according to social classes, the geography of inequalities. Hydrogeography of Czechia: watercourses and slow-moving waters, their typology and regionalisation; sources of drinking water; impact of climate change on water resources in urban and rural landscapes; water protection. Electoral geography of Czechia. Geography of economic activities of Czechia. Climate and its change in Czechia part of environmental risks. Climate characteristics, data sources for their monitoring. Climate extremes and climate change adaptation strategies. Soils and forests of Czechia: where they are and why they are there. Integration clusters and the Czech Republic. Environmental status and protection in Czechia: indicators of environmental status, sources of data and information. Nature and landscape protection as part of indicators and measures.

Learning outcomes
The course characterizes the conditions of Czechia, focusing on the geology, relief, climate, water, soils and biota, socio-economic characteristics, and the living environment. Emphasis is on the mutual influence of individual components and the effects on the quality of the environment. The cross-border connections with neighbourhood regions are discussed too. Attention is paid to geographical aspects of current topics of environmental and social environment changes.

fundamentals of physical, human and regional geography, cartography and GIS

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Presentation of group work, Oral presentation of self-study

Students will know and understand Czech spatial reality: public administration, physical and cultural landscapes, regions, economy and society, policies and culture. In the term paper, students will demonstrate their ability to geographically analyse the natural and social conditions of a selected border administrative region. By solving the semestral project, the student will strengthen the following capabilities and skills: - apply the SWOT method to a geographical region, - analyse the broader spatial relations of the region, - examine the status and potential of European grant policy for the development of the border regions, - explore the environmental risks of the region, - formulate a professional geographical text containing spatial analysis and synthesis, - work with sources of data and information, use them in a professionally correct and ethical manner, - use the creation of thematic maps as a means of understanding and expressing the spatial patterns of the region, - organise teamwork.
