Lectures: 1) Renewal of post-war Czechoslovakia, political and economic system of the third republic, foreign policy of the country. 2) Coping with Nazism and collaboration, retributive justice, the position of non-Slavic national minorities. 3) Elections in June 1946 and the gradual intensification of the struggle for democracy against the background of the collapse of the anti-fascist coalition in the world. 4) The takeover of monopoly power in the country by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in February 1948 and the beginning of the destruction of the democratic system. 5) The founding period of the communist regime in 1948-1953, the transformation of the country's political and economic system and the social structure of its population, industrialization and collectivization, the character of the Communist Party as a party of power. 6) Cult of personality and its manifestations, culture in the founding period of the regime. 7) Persecution of real and potential opponents of the regime, political processes of the late 1940s and 1950s, forms of anti-regime resistance, post-February emigration and its activities. 8) The crisis of the communist regime in 1953 and 1956 and the moderate destalinization of the country, the political, economic-social and cultural development of Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 1950s and early 1960s. 9) Political, cultural, economic and social development of Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, efforts to liberalize the regime and make it more effective. 10) Prague Spring 1968/69 - an attempt to reform socialism, the renewal of civil society, the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and its consequences. 11) The defeat of the reform movement in 1969 and the punishment of its actors, the first phase of the so-called normalization and persecution of its opponents, the internal character of the Communist Party after the "restoration of order". 12) Political, economic and social development of Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and the first half of the 1980s, culture and everyday life in "normalizing" Czechoslovakia. 13) Opposition and non-conformist activities in the 1970s and 1980s. and sanctions of its actors, samizdat, Charter 77, underground, independent religious activities, peace and environmental movements, exile. 14) The crisis of the normalization regime in the second half of the 1980s and efforts to overcome it, perestroika and glasnost in Czechoslovakia, the activation of the public and the emergence of new independent initiatives, the November Revolution in 1989. Exercises: The lectures are followed by exercises, where students will interpret important written and audiovisual sources on partial key topics of the period and discuss them. Part of the course is a professional excursion related to Czechoslovak history in the period under review.
