Learning outcomes
Students will become familiar with the development of the culture of the Czech lands in the "long" 19th century (1792-1914) in connection with events in Europe and with regard to its material and spiritual changes. Attention is focused on the power-strengthening and weakening layers of society in the era of expanding industrialization, nationalization, secularization of the state and general rationalization of society. The interpretation reflects the history of culture in the development of material and spiritual life in the early modern age. Subsequently, the lectures will focus on fundamental changes in the culture of the Czech lands after both world wars and the political upheavals of the "short" 20th century (1914-1989). He takes into account the cultural changes in Europe influenced by the alternation of dictatorial and democratic regimes. He also pays attention to the culture of the marginalized, or persecuted groups of the population as well as newly established political (pseudo) elites. It also focuses on the influence of new, rapidly spreading media and the increasing leveling of the majority of society subjected to the dictates of power. Lectures: 1) Industrial age: factories, inventions, production and progress - a phenomenon of modern times 2) Medicine, physical education, tourism, sport - a sign of exceptionality and a mass phenomenon 3) Science and education in the service of the nation 4) Literature in political rivalry and national education 5) Nobility and bourgeoisie - part of society in its zenith and in progress 6) Renaissance as a cultural type 7) Nationalism as a cultural phenomenon 8) Transformation of the residential culture of villages and towns - elimination of disproportions 9) Clothing, appearance as an element of social adaptation and political integrity 10) Diet, body care as a manifestation of modernity and education 11) Information and media as a powerful phenomenon of the 20th century 12) Literature, theatre, film as means of socialization and manipulation 13) Marginal groups and marginalization of politically unacceptable persons 14) Sport, health and politics, economy and its forms, science, research, education, digital technology
Lectures on the history of art will acquaint students chronologically with the development of this field in the period from about 1780 to 1890. Emphasis will be placed on the transformation of culture and the importance of fine arts in connection with political, religious, social and economic changes. From the point of view of art history, the interpretation will focus on the development of fine arts in the years 1890-2000.
Prerequisites
Fulfilment of previous study obligations, basic knowledge of history, culture from the middle age to 20th century and terminology.
