Course content
Lectures: 1) The beginnings of modern art, the influence of French and German art culture on the domestic art scene. 2) Romanticism and realism in 19th century painting. 3) Architecture of the Vienna Ringstrasse and its reception in the Czech lands. 4) Historicism on the example of the Liberec garden city. 5) Is there a national art? 6) Classical Czech modernism? from Osmy to HoHoKoKo. 7) The origin of abstraction and its penetration into Czech fine arts. 8) German-speaking visual artists in interwar Czechoslovakia and their artistic groups 9) Art in the service of the state. 10) Art forms of the second half of the 20th century - architecture. 11) Art forms of the second half of the 20th century - fine arts. 12) Forms of modernism in the second half of the 20th century on the example of the region. 13) New media as an artefact 14) Possibilities of using permanent exhibitions to deepen knowledge from the DU of the 19th and 20th centuries. Exercises: The lectures are followed by exercises in which students practically use the acquired knowledge from both the history of culture and the history of art, on specific examples in the region.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic overview of the fundamental changes in fine arts of Czech lands of the 19th and 20th centuries. The overview will follow the basic chronological line, the interpretation will focus on the facts and methodology. Special emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of modern art in the context of the region, on German-speaking artists and architects. Important milestones associated with political development (official cultural policy after 1948 versus free forms of expression) will be selected for the second half of the 20th century. For the period after 1989, emphasis will be placed on providing insight into the diversity of curatorial and artistic approaches.
Students will be acquainted with the development of fine arts and architecture in the Czech lands of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Prerequisites
Fulfillment of previous study obligations, basic knowledge of art history terminology.
