Course content
Annotation: The lectures focus on the political development of the Czech lands within the Habsburg monarchy in the first half of the so-called long 19th century. During this stage, power relations in Europe changed significantly, affecting both the international position of the monarchy and its internal development. In this context, the changes in the political system of the monarchy and the position of the Czech lands within it until the revolutionary year of 1848 will be discussed. The lectures will also capture the economic, religious and cultural life in the Czech lands. Lectures: 1) Enlightenment reforms of Joseph II. and Leopold II. The Habsburg Monarchy and the Czech lands during the Great French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars (the end of the Holy Roman Empire, the emergence of the Austrian Empire). 2) Congress of Vienna, Holy Alliance, constitution of the German Association and the Czech lands. Metternich absolutism and the Czech lands. European revolutionary waves in the first half of the 19th century and their response in the Czech lands. 3) Economic development of the Czech lands within the monarchy (industrialization, its influence on the structure of society and changes in the landscape). 4) The transformation of the "traditional" class society from the abolition of slavery to the end of servitude (1781-1848). The bourgeoisie as a growing political and business class of Czech society. Rural population and its thinking. 5) Czech national movement - its development, representatives and supporters. Formation of Slovak national consciousness. 6) Francis II and Ferdinand V. - the specifics of their government. The Catholic Church, non-Catholics and (legal) changes in the status of Jews. Changes in education 1774-1848. 7) German and Czech literature and theater. Its representatives in the Czech lands. New styles: Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier. Exercises: The lectures are followed by exercises in which students in independent presentations demonstrate the ability to work with contemporary textual and pictorial sources and critically formulate conclusions from the studied literature.
