Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to prepare students for the pitfalls of the consequences of a globalized world in the communication environment of the Czech school and education system in general. In a situation where, in addition to pupils from minority backgrounds (Slovak, Roma, Polish), pupils and students from non-European areas with diverse cultural backgrounds (especially Vietnam, Russia, Ukraine, other countries of the former USSR, China, Balkan countries, Lebanon, Israel, etc.), the demands on the cultural outlook and communication skills of teachers of social sciences, including history, are also increasing. The aim of the course is to acquaint students through reading, lectures and practical exercises with the historical and cultural background of the development of selected regions in the recent past (especially in the 20th century). Thanks to this, they can not only better understand the different view of the past of students with other than Central European family backgrounds, and thus better cope with the difficulties of intercultural communication. The purpose of the course is to use the apparent obstacle in pedagogical work in favor of the application of communication skills and building key competencies in global processes, multiculturalism, social communication, media literacy and teamwork.
It corresponds to the definition of the subject and to the demands given in syllabus.

Credit requirements: Assessment - credit (Deadline: 15. 12. 2025): The condition for credit is: - participation in the discussion within the exercise based on the continuous study of the assigned materials/texts, etc. Completion of two tasks based on reading: 1: Write a short reader's reflection on the title BURUMA, Ian - MARGALIT, Avishai: Occidentalism. The West through the eyes of enemies in the range of 3-4 short theses (approx. 1.5-2NS) /the book is available in PDF in a shared folder/. Objective: Based on several specific passages and quotes from the book (including standard note-taking), write 3-4 short theses in which you summarize what reading the book brought you, especially whether and how reading the book helped you realize that the "Western" view of the world may not be self-evident for all pupils/students in the Czech education system. 2: Based on reading one selected chapter from the book Tim MARSHALL, In the Captivity of Geography, /the book is available in PDF in a shared folder/ develop a didactically focused treatment of the selected topic in SW Prezi.com/Padlet/Canva, etc. Objective: The output should be focused didactically, i.e. the concept and content of the reflection of the given chapter in the "presentation" should be such that its form helps fellow students understand the core of the argument that the author formulates in the given chapter in relation to the selected region. It is expected to use appropriate citations of key passages (with links), map views, glosses, other graphic materials, related sources, etc. The use of AI tools to prepare the output is possible and welcome, but on the condition that the tools used and specific prompts are transparently stated in the final slide or in the appendix. *** Assignments will be submitted to the teacher by the specified deadlines in an editable format/link via shared document tables (not by email!!!) - evaluation of the work will take place online
