Course content
1) The fall of Communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1989 (in connection with East European revolutions of 1989). 2) Problems of Czech-Slovak relations; first free elections, crises of Czech-Slovak relations in 1991 3) Transformation of economy 4) Elections in June 1992 and its consequences. 5) The split of Czecho-Slovak Federation 6) Political and ecenomical development of the Czech republik 1993-1999. Czech-Slovak customs union. International relations 7) Slovakia during the cabinets of Vladimír Mečiar (1993-1998). Their impact on Czech-Slovak relations. The fall of Mečiar´s regime. 8) Czech Republic is joining NATO (1999) and EU (2004); Slovakia is joining NATO and EU (2004) 9) Czech and Slovak Republiics are joining Schengen area.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to explain the current history of Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic respectively from the fall of Communist régime in 1989 to 2007 when the Czech Republic joined the Schengen area. The lectures describe mainly the transformation of economy and political systhem after 1989 and the reasons for the split of Czechoslovakia in 1992 and the integration of Czech republic into international structures.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Active attendance on discussions (lessons); fulfilment of homework; study of recommended literature. Every student must read at least three books dealing with the topic (it is possible to read also other books than those on the list) and must write a short essay.
