Learning outcomes
The course is devoted to a selected topic from older history. As an example, we present the course Municipal Union in the Middle Ages. Since the mid-13th century, several city associations were established in the territory of the Holy Roman Empire. Their origins arose from the cooperation of several cities, which by political, economic, legal and, in exceptional cases, military means prevented the efforts of secular and spiritual authorities to control them. The cities jointly fought against unjustified myths and customs charges on land and waterways, trying to combat the ravages of Lapland groups and suppress piracy on the Baltic Sea. Representatives of city associations acted as an important political force in negotiations with the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire, with the kings of England, Denmark, the Earls of Flanders or with representatives of the Teutonic Knights in Prussia. The course will present the Rhine City Union, the Swabian City Union, Six Towns and the Hansa, their internal organization, ways of communication and their relations with the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire and with secular and spiritual authorities.
It corresponds to the definition of the subject and to the demands given in syllabus.
