Course content
Anyone who speaks, writes or communicates with signs of other kinds (e.g. gestures) acts! He or she does something very practical and is responsible for the consequences. This seminar is about looking at language in connection with social action. It is asked what consequences this pragmatic character has for the structure and meaning of linguistic utterances. First, the basic concepts of linguistic pragmatics are developed (utterance, presupposition, speech acts, implicatures, rationality). Then, the change in pragmatics from a theoretical to an increasingly empirical discipline is traced (and the reasons for it). Finally, using examples from authentical discourse, the central question for linguistics concering the relationship between communicative function (pragmatics) and linguistic form (grammar) is discussed.
