1. Education and humanity - Jan Amos Comenius and education as a remedy of society. Influence of J. A. Comenius on pietism, philanthropy and modern pedagogy. 2. Sense, senses and education - enlightenment education in England (John Locke) and France (Jean Jacques Rousseau). Principle of authority and freedom in education. 3. Education and its usefulness for humans, society, nation: German philanthropism of the 18th century. J. H. Pestalozzi. Formation of the modern school system in the Czech lands: Teresian school laws, F. Kindermann. Method and school: J. I. Felbiger and Methodical Books. The beginnings of professionalisation of the teaching profession. 4. System and education - J. F. Herbart. Progress and education, positivism and education - H. Spencer, G. A. Lindner, J. Úlehla. 5. Action and education - American pragmatic education and American progressivism (John Dewey). 6. School, education and reform: free education, world reform educational movement - origins, concept, representatives. School reform and society reform in the 20th century - possibilities, limits, dangers. The movement of new education. 7. Czechoslovak reform educational movement - 1st and 2nd decade of Czechoslovakia and its part in the international reform-pedagogical debate. Václav Příhoda and the principle of rationalization in education. 8. School and education in the care of non-freedom (1948-1989): ideology and education, development of socialist education, schools and out-of-school institutions in socialist Czechoslovakia.

Learning outcomes
|
The course acquaints with the historical view of the aims, processes and methods of education with regard to broader sociological and pedagogical contexts. Further, the course deals with the development of education and the formulation and solution of the basic questions of the school (internal course) and the school system in the development of the 19th and 20th century. The course is conceived as an insight into the historical patterns of education for the students of teaching programmes. The course helps to analyze the current problems of the school and the educational system with regard to the historical context.
After completion of the course student will be able: 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of History of education 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral paper 4. to apply gained knowledge in educational process
