Course content
1. Concept definition of social disadvantage. Families with a low social-economic status. Families with a different social-cultural status. Asylum seekers' families. Issues of children of foreigners from third world countries in the Czech Republic (Mongolia, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Ukraine). Families endangered by social pathological phenomena ? gambling, prostitution, addiction to psychoactive drugs. Children undergoing institutionalized care. 2. Basic attributes of mental development of socially disadvantaged children. Deficiencies in cognitive, emotional and social development. Possibilities of identification of these deficiencies by teachers, cooperation with pedagogical-psychological clinic and pediatrist. 3. Basic principles of communication with legal representatives and families of socially disadvantaged children. The meaning of regular communication, cooperation with childcare authorities and other institutions authorized to social-legal protection of children. Cooperation with non-profit organizations providing social services and consultations for socially disadvantaged families. 4. Issues of CAN (abused and neglected child syndrome), identification of child with CAN syndrome and well-timed intervention for the benefit of the child in accordance with the law.

Learning outcomes
The subject is drawn in a way that the students would a) find their bearings in a wider social context of issues of socially disadvantaged children (children from families with a low social-economic status, different social-cultural status, threatened by social pathological influences, asylum seekers' children, children in institutionalized care), b) be able to identify socially disadvantaged pre-school children and their educational needs, c) acquire basic principles of effective communication with legal representatives (family, foster parents, childcare authorities, workers of institutionalized care) of socially disadvantaged children, d) understand the meaning of interdisciplinary cooperation of teacher and other institutions at socially disadvantaged children, especially with organizations authorized to social-legal protection of children.
After completion of the subject student will be able 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of Social disadvantage in pre-school education 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral theses 4. to apply gained knowledge in educational process 5. to be motivated for continuous learning in the field
Prerequisites
Student has knowledge of psychology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student's performance analysis, Case history method, Written assignment

80% presence in class, the student starts cooperation with a non-profit organization supporting socially disadvantaged families ? the outcome will be a seminary work containing a case study of a selected client family with a pre-school child.
