Course content
1. Culture - definition of the concept, basic theories of culture, the influence of culture on socialization and on the educational process. Formation of individual - group - national - cultural identities and their significance for individuals and society. 2. The multicultural reality of the contemporary world and Europe - development, presence, migration and interconnection of cultures in the historical perspective nowadays. Multicultural reality in the Czech Republic - foreigners, asylum seekers, minorities and subcultures. Relationships of majority and minorities in contemporary society. Legal status of minorities, foreigners, asylum seekers and other groups. 3. Intercultural communication - perception, specifics of verbal and non-verbal communication, communication etiquette, problems of prejudices and stereotypes, racism and xenophobia. Development of intercultural sensitivity and intercultural competencies. 4. Education in schools in the Czech Republic with regard to the representation of foreigners, members of minorities and subcultures. Integrative and inclusive concepts. 5. Child / pupil with a different mother tongue - specifics, methods and forms of helping to adapt to school and teaching requirements. 6. Methodology, instructions, suggestions for self-study of multicultural reality at a selected workplace (school, school club, leisure-time institutions). 7. Methodology of creating a program with a multicultural theme for elementary school pupils. Examples of good practice - knowledge and experience with the application of methods of multicultural education abroad and in the Czech Republic.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments)

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the multicultural reality of contemporary society, focusing on the specifics of working with children and pupils with socio-cultural differences. Emphasis is placed on the integration and inclusive concept of multiculturalism and on the awareness and development of intercultural competencies.
After completion of the course student will be able: 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of Multicultural education 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral paper 4. to apply gained knowledge in educational process
Prerequisites
Student has knowledge of primary education and psychology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral presentation of self-study, Written assignment

Active participation in seminars. Study of scholar literature. Implementation of own investigation of multicultural reality at selected school. Preparing of own program with multicultural theme.
