The subject comprises the general patterns of ecology, which is conceived here in the classical sense as a biological discipline dealing with the relationship between organisms and the environment. This subject cannot be confused with environmentalism or environmental education. Basic ecological knowledge is necessary for understanding the patterns in nature and completing the subject provides an appropriate knowledge enhancement for teachers of all grades. General environmental principles are always explained through practical examples drawn not only from theoretical, but also applied ecology and are aimed at enabling students to better understand the often discussed significant social themes (landscape fragmentation, water eutrophication, management in national parks, etc.)
