Course content
1. Identity: personal and group identity, its formation, main resources, primary and secondary identity, similarity and difference as a part of identity, character of postmodern identity 2. Culture and ethnicity: ethnicity vs. race, ethnic identity, ethnic group, ethnic (national) minority, intercultural communication 3. Minority: national minorities, marginalized groups, old vs. new minorities, indigenous peoples, foreigners, current status and connection with the Czech Republic 4. Migration: definition, implications for the Czech Republic, social consequences and context, typology, main theories of migration, situation in the Czech Republic 5. Social perception and cognition: formation of stereotypes and prejudices, stereotypes, halo effect, projection, application in practice; social exclusion: dimension, origin, reproduction, solution, connection with education, particular example 6. Models of coexistence (policies) of majority and minorities: isolationism, assimilation, (melting pot), segregation, multiculturalism 7. Sociocultural diversity in school environment: potential disadvantages, theories, children with a different mother tongue and work with them (and their parents)

Learning activities and teaching methods
Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments), Written assignment presentation and defence, Active metods (simulation, situational contingency methods, drama,acting, namagerial acting )
  • Class attendance - 14 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 30 hours per semester
  • Presentation preparation (report) - 16 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Students will be led to think of "otherness" and its possible meanings in society. The course defines and categorizes interpersonal differences on social and cultural backgrounds and introduces students to the basic problems concerning the coexistence of the majority society with individuals or groups that are socially or culturally different. There will be delimitation of basic concepts and concepts (nationality, identity, minority, race, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, racism, stereotypes, assimilation, integration, multiculturalism and others) with an emphasis on the context of the school environment and the work of teachers.
