Course content

Lectures: 1) Context of study of national groups 2) Migration: global phenomenon - local consequences 3) Identity 4) Ethnic identity 5) Social perception and cognition. Attitudes and relationships 6) Models of coexistence of majority and minority society; phenomena that are significant in terms of social work 7) Social work with national minorities Seminars: 1) Determinants of inclusion of a member of another nationality into society 2) Cultural differences 3) Self-reflection 4) Social context 5) Ethical dilemmas relevant to social work with others 6) Case of a municipality with a socially excluded locality - part I. 7) Case of a community with a socially excluded locality - part II.

Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments), Written assignment presentation and defence

Learning outcomes
|
Students will be acquainted with basic problems concerning coexistence of majority society with national minorities. Basic terms and concepts will be defined (nationality, identity, minority, race, xenophobia, ethnocentrism, racism, stereotypes, assimilation, integration, inclusion, multiculturalism), including a warning about the ideological abuse of these terms. The principles of creation and existence of social exclusion will be clarified. Students will be emphasized the context of the topics discussed with social work as well as with other subjects of the Social Work study program.

Student's performance analysis, Written assignment
Active participation in lessons, elaboration of encyclopaedic entry on given topic, continuous contribution to discussion forum on given topics.
