Course content
|
Lectures: 1) General and theoretical basis of Romany studies; basic concepts; the origin of Roma people. 2) Roma identity. 3) The social structure of the Roma community. Basic ethical norms and models of normative behaviour. Family coexistence - a traditional Roma family. 4) Current issues of the Roma ethnic group. 5) Roma culture, periodicals, literature. Roma organizations, activities and associations. Government and non-governmental organizations to help the Roma minority. 6) Social exclusion. 7) Methods and techniques of social work with the Roma minority. Seminars: 1) The mental image of the term "Roma". Self-reflection. 2) Cultural differences. Roma people abroad. 3) Social context. 4) Ethical dilemmas relevant to social work with members of other nationalities. 5) Use of theories, methods and techniques of social work in practice with members of the Roma minority. 6) Case of a municipality with a socially excluded locality - part I. 7) Case of a community with a socially excluded locality - part II.

Learning outcomes
|
The course emphasizes a multidisciplinary perspective, i.e. it is based on the knowledge of anthropology, demography, sociology, psychology, linguistics, political science, etc., which connects with theory and practice of social work. Students will learn the basic problems related to the coexistence of the majority society with the Roma minority. There will be a definition of basic terms and concepts, including a warning of the ideological abuse of them. The principles of creation and existence of social exclusion will be clarified. The subject will emphasize the context of the topics discussed with social work as well as with other subjects of the Social Work program.
