Course content
Lectures: 1. Design and the Second World War: crisis of human values, social changes, acceleration of science and technology, new materials, military and political propaganda, Volkswagen and Jeep. 2. - 3. The beginning of the plastic era of the 1950s: American consumer paradise, commercial potential of design in the USA, biomorphic modernism, economic miracle of European countries, the beginning of Scandinavian design, connecting modern expression with national traditions, Kovář's school in Czechoslovakia, establishment Kovotechny, Liberec Plastimat. 4. - 6. Fresh, young, exciting, 1960s: rapid technical progress, "Space Age" style, POP-ART and POP-DESIGN, Hochschule fuer Gestaltung Ulm-rationalist design, Japanese boom, international influence of Italian design (Olivetti), experiments of the British group Archigram, Brussels EXPO 58, dynamics of the Brussels style. 7. - 9. Establishment of postmodernism in the 70s and 80s of the 20th century: Alchimia, Memphis and the personality of E. Sottsasse, neomodernism, high-tech, design aristocrat Bořek Šípek, design proposals by Milan Knížák, Attika group. 10. - 11. New modesty of the 90s of the 20th century: democratization of creation, theme of ecology and ethics, modular systems, mobility, alternative products, green design, hybrid procedures, Jasper Morrison, Karim Rashid, Luciano Paganini, typical home office, Droog Design. 12. - 13. The challenge of new technologies of the first decade of the 21st century: globalization of design and ecology, futuristic visions, the phenomenon of individualism: Philippe Starck, the progress of information technology, miniaturization. 14. Current tendencies: personalities of world design, contemporary Czech design, prognosis of further development. Exercises: Visits to current exhibitions, collections of the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec - applied design and electrical design, design exhibition UPM Prague, NTM Prague, field discussions, presentation preparation, presentation of papers on the selected topic.

Learning outcomes
A historical-problem presentation of the history of applied art and design of the Euro-American and Czech circle from World War II to the present. The interpretation of stylistic changes and geographical variants of applied art and design will be continuously accompanied by an analysis of various theoretical topics: economic; the political and ideological context of design in Western consumer society and in the society of so-called real socialism; design in the context of new materials and technologies; proto-ecological and ecological contexts of design; utopian thinking and futuristic themes in design; design for groups of people with special needs etc.

Credit: participation in exercises, oral presentation, written essay on the topic. Exam: oral, defense of semester work.
