Course content
Lectures: 1. Concepts of design, decor, motif, design, ornament; examples of changes in the patterning of ornament and design in historical, cultural and social contexts. 2. Decor and its basic elements; focus on shapes, forms, textures and colors. Comparison of traditional decors on objects from past epochs and on current objects and materials. 3. Basic overview of ornaments, their main components and the basis of their sources of inspiration. Terminology. History of the origin of the most famous ornaments and their use in applied art and design from the mid-20th century to the present. 4. The influence of decor on the environment of the individual and society of the 20th century, the psychology of the perception of colors, patterns and shapes. 5. The influence of free art on the decor. Creating decors by important personalities of the art world. 6. Decor in the period of cubism, art deco and interwar modernism in architecture and on objects in applied art, jewelry and fashion. Functionalism. A. Loose's concept "Ornament is a crime." Decor in the beauty of structures and textures of natural materials. 7. Decor in the period after World War II and in the 1950s. The influence of neo-baroque, social civilism, floral motifs, assumptions of the Brussels style. 60s and the end of the Brussels style, new materials, the influence of new scientific discoveries. . 8. 70s and romanticizing tendencies, return of floral motifs, new colors. 80s and decor as a by-product of taste. New geometry. 9. 90s and postmodern, decor as an eccentric affair. Influences of free art on the decor of applied art. The beginning of the new millennium and decor as a measured part of objects, a return to respecting the naturalness of materials, variations on the theme of geometry and nature 10. Decor and its importance in today's applied art and architecture with an overlap into the future. Exercises: Students will learn the basic compositional parts of the decor on specific examples: shapes, forms, textures and colors. Students will prepare a seminar paper on a given topic - the development of various types of decor in the 20th century, various periods of development, artistic directions and their approach to decor, important designers and the use of decor in their creation. Learning outcomes
Students will get acquainted with basic concepts: decor, motif, design, ornament. They will gain a basic historical overview of motifs in applied art from prehistory to the present with an emphasis on their use in applied art of the 20th and 21st centuries. They will get a more detailed overview of artistic trends, movements, schools and authors important for the development of decor, especially in Europe and the USA, but also in non-European cultures. Teaching will be more narrowly focused on textiles, clothing, clothing accessories, jewelry and also glassmaking. They will get acquainted with the work of individual designers from the above-mentioned fields, as well as with the commercial serial production of major brands.

Credit: participation in exercises, elaboration of a semester work on a given topic. Exam: written, defense of semester work.
