Course content
1. Basic terms and definitions 2. Categorization of composites according to fibrous reinforcement 3. Composite properties - major effects 4. Quantitative structural analysis of textile composites 5. Design of composite structures - mixing rules 6. Reinforcing fibres properties I. (glass, ceramics, boron, basalt, carbon) 7. Reinforcing fibres properties II. (polymers, metals, natural fibres) 8. Properties of matrices I. (utility and technological properties) 9. Selected methods of composite's manufacturing, and applications of textile composites 10. Biocomposites and textile structural composites Practicals on Textile Reinforced Composites Laboratory practicals are focused on the design, preparation and testing of textile structural composites. Students practice the testing of selected reinforcing fibers - multifilament analysis (geometric properties, fiber density), analysis of mechanical properties of fibers and composite design (composite calculations). Then follow the preparation of composite samples (preparation of fiber reinforcement, impregnation of reinforcement), and the production of samples using selected technologies. Finally, students test selected properties of produced composites, and prepare a final report on the performed experiments.

  • Preparation for formative assessments - 20 hours per semester
  • Home preparation for classes - 40 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 40 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 24 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to make students familiar with Textile Structural Composites, and to explain basic definitions and concepts of composite engineering. The classification of composite systems will be presented, principles of structural approach to description of heterogeneous materials properties will be explained, and principles of textile composite design will be discussed. Further, the influence of individual components (properties of fibers, matrices and interfaces), geometrical aspects of composite structure, and basic procedures for prediction of final material properties will be explained.
