Course content
1. Introduction to the history of industrial design; response to the industrial revolution in our lands until the Jubilee Exhibition in 1891; the concept of design and industrial design. 2. The period from the end of the 19th century to the emergence of avant-garde tendences in 1920s; civilisation-related development of new elements (new means of transport; technology for households; development of electric lights; F. Křižík); the first participation of architects in the development of products; P. Behrens, J. Kotěra, F. Anýž, the European context. 3. Inter-war avant-garde of 1920s and 1930s; the beginnings of design in industry in the USA and Europe; Bauhaus; the functionalist tendencies and its protagonists in the design of products in the Czechoslovak Republic; M. Prokop and others. 4. The period from the second half of 1930s until the end of 1940s; the application of aerodynamic principles and new engineering designs in the development of the means of transport; the development of organic shapes of objects; the School of Art in Zlín and the pioneering efforts in shaping machines and tools; Z. Kovář and humanisation of technology and production; the influence of World War II on the development of technologies and research and development in industry. 5. 1950s; development of organic morphology in specific machines, tools and products; post-war rational approach to design - HfG Ulm and Braun; the application of new technologies and materials (plastic materials); the EXPO 58 exhibition. 6. 1960s; the ongoing penetration of design to other production sectors; the application of designing work in our lands; the institutions (RVKV, Úbok); the emergence of Italian progressive design. 7. 1970s and 1980s; the growing trend of comprehensive designing work and the development of teamwork; new directions in the global developments; post-modernism; hi-tech; important persons. 8. 1990s and the present times; comprehensive change in our lands; opening up to the global world and emergence of new technologies and materials; 9. Methodology of design and industrial design; examples of production procedures and methods; Škoda Plzeň; Škoda Auto Ml. Boleslav; old x new methods of creating a design; globally new criteria of design; new trends - a generally friendly and environment-friendly design. 10. Final test 11. Once and twice during the term - an educational tour, an exhibition, etc., according to the currently available opportunities.

Learning outcomes
Encyclopaedic lectures on history of industrial design in Czech lands from the beginning of 19th century till the beginning of the 21st century. The lectures are divided into 9 chronologically consecutive blocks, each provided with about 100 digitally projected pictures. The last lecture, the 10th, deals with methodology of design, comparison of creative methods of designers in the 20th and 21st centuries, and examples of the works. Consultation for students is available after a lecture ends.
To grasp knowledge of trends of contemporary design and its theory.

An introductory essay on the topic: What design means to me. After the 6th lecture, an essay on the topic: The creative works of a chosen Czech designer Final test for students.
