Course content
1. Summary of the basic schools of modern architecture of 1920s and 1930s; an overview of literature on the history of architecture from 1945 up until the present times. 2. Mies van der rohe and the international style. 3. The post-war work of Le Corbusier; sculptural tendencies in architecture and brutalism 4. Alvar Aalto and organic architecture 5. Archigram, the early works of James Stirling 6. The post-war Dutch architecture 7. Czech architecture: from socialist realism to restoration of the modern tradition 8. Louis Kahn 9. Period criticism of the modern style and the tendencies of post-modern architecture 10. High-tech architecture 11. Swiss minimalism and Spanish works after the downfall of Frank's regime. 12. ""Green"" architecture 13. Czech architecture of 1970s and 1980s; the SIAL studio in the city of Liberec. 14. Czech architecture after 1989

Learning outcomes
A series of lectures will introduce the development of modern international and Czech architecture from the 1960s till present time within the broader cultural and artistic context. When interpreting the various architectural and artistic currents, the formal and semantic analysis will also refer to the connection with social and political context of the time. Overview of the topics: 1. Post-war work of Frank L. Wright and organic architecture in the USA 2. Post-war Alvar Aalto and Hans Scharoun and European organic architecture 3. Louis I. Kahn 4. Critique of modern architecture, Team X, postmodernism 5. High-tech 6. Deconstructivism 7. Minimalism 8. "Green" architecture 9. Architecture and public space 10. Post-war Dutch architecture 11. Czech architecture before and in the first decade after 1989 12. Contemporary architecture in the USA 13. Contemporary Scandinavian architecture
