The course builds on the course History of Urban Design 1 and focuses on the situation of cities and public space in the 20th and 21st centuries. Cities are undergoing a radical transformation in the 19th century as a result of the Industrial Revolution and it has a dramatic impact on culture as a whole. Therefore, the lectures focus on a variety of solutions to the crisis of traditionally conceived cities: they introduce both utopian and totalitarian ideas about the future of cities. Similarly, space is devoted to the historical overview of individual settlements or trends. Great emphasis is placed on the present, when information flows and global capitalism are transforming the face of landscapes and cities. Students will be invited to participate actively on the basis of the chosen texts by the authors of the 20th and 21st centuries (see Bibliography).
