Course content
Course will be concerned with specific artistic themes as well as with period themes: the role of physicality in contrast with spirituality, space and light, rhetoric versus naturalism and emotion, life as dream, the layered, self-reflexive nature of consciousness, science and the rise of modern skepticism, etc.

Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing)

Learning outcomes
Art and Architecture at the background of the rise of the modern world from the 18th to the 19th century. The series of lectures combines art and architecture with identifying period phenomena: industrialization, urban growth, the development of transport, connecting the world, colonialism and the West meeting other cultures, political revolutions and reactions, forming the public, citizenship and modern democracy. The student is acquainted with the basic concepts, the development of art and architecture in this historical context, with case studies focused on key works and creators. Topics: 1. Introduction: the idea of modernity, revolution in politics, science and technology 2. Classicism, empire 3. Revolution in architecture and "revolutionary architecture". Utopia 4. Romanticism 5. Historicism 6. Development of landscape creation and a new view on the landscape. Aesthetics sublime a picturesque 7. New building typologies: public buildings. Opera houses, museums, prisons, railway stations, libraries 8. Realism 9. New media, graphic techniques, visual communication 10. Urban planning: Paris (Haussmann), Vienna (Ringstrasse) and other cities 11. Diorama, panorama, photography. Optics and art 12. World Exhibitions: innovation, didactics and spectacle 13. Industrial architecture. Industry and cities. The social dimension of architecture 14. Impressionism, postimpressionism and new dimensions of colour 15. Symbolism, art nouveau, Jugendstil, Art Nouveau 16. Modernity in architecture at the turn of the century: H. P. Berlage , German Werkbund, Oto Wagner and his students
To develop the ability of reflection and contextual thinking. To grasp knowledge of relations of visual art and architecture of that period of time.
