Course content
1. The growth of cities and change of social life. 2. Discovery of lithography and new media of visual communication. 3. The role of spectacle - diorama, panorama, photography, cinema. 4. Industry and art. Industrial exhibitions. 5. Engineering and architecture. 6. Tendencies towards modern art 7. Impressionism, symbolism, decadence and Art Nouveau.

Learning outcomes
The course will present the art of the 19th century in a controversy of two modes of life and production: polytechnic and technological modes of civilization. Course will discuss the birth of art history and problems with historicism in the culture of the 19th century. The course will be focused on variety of style tendencies, such as romanticism, realism, and impressionism and on conflicts between rationality and irrationality in approaches to art and life. Course will introduce and share knowledge about this époque of historicism and modernity in art, architecture and design.
To develop the ability of reflection and contextual thinking. To grasp knowledge of social and technological context of contemporary art and architecture .
