Course content
The panorama of the Czech architecture of the 20th century on the background of European history. Characteristic reatures. Wanger's disciples are building the institutions of a new state. Cubism, rationalism, monometallism. Young modern avant-garde as a parallel movement. Constructivist and functionalist avant-garde. Rebellion. The Devětsil group; Karel Teige, a theoretician. Teige's constructivist theories. Functionalism, international relations. Bauhaus, Le Curbusier, Soviet constructivists. A collective house as an instrument of social transformation. The PAS group. Post-war period: Establishment of State Design Institutes. The era of ""socialist realism"" in the architecture of the 1950s. The urbanist period; construction of sets of buildings in housing estates; industrialisation; standardisation; reduction of the range of building industry products; dominance of ""building industry production"". The Czech architecture from the late 1980s up until the present times. A competition of bids for the Old Town Hall in 1987. The contemporary Czech architecture. An educational tour.

Learning outcomes
The seminar is especially focused on architecture at the beginning of the 21st Century. Emphasis is on first-hand experience of prominent Czech architectural works and thorough familiarisation with some of the world-renowned works.
To grasp knowledge of current trends in architecture.
