Course content
Owerview of lectures: 1. Geological history of the Earth, stratigraphic scale, structure of the Earth and plate tectonics 2. Classification and composition of the rocks and soils, main rock-forming minerals 3. Magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, rocks identification 4. Regional geology of the Bohemian Massif, geological maps 5. Basics of hydrology, hydrogeology, water in soils and rocks, water aggressiveness on the foundation of buildings 6. Geohazards - volcanic activity, seismicity, landslides, undermined areas 7. Classification of rock soils for the purposes of building foundations 8. Engineering geological survey, geotechnical categories 9. Earth retaining structures, eatrh pressures, soil compaction 10. Foundation pits, dewatering of the foundation pits, workability of rocks and soils 11 Shallow foundations 12. Deep foundations

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments)

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of general and engineering geology, with geotechnical risks in construction and with basic geotechnical problems in the field of earthworks and foundations.
Basic knowledge of soil and rock properties with regard to their suitability for building foundations, basic knowledge in the field of earthworks and shallow and deep foundations.
