Learning outcomes
The course includes typological principles for designing all types of buildings in terms of barrier-free accessibility and use of buildings by persons with mobility, visual, hearing and mental disabilities. The student will use a project from studio work or pre-prepared documentation and after the individual lectures, they will incorporate the acquired knowledge, i. e. the 7 principles of universal design so that the student's designs does not discriminate persons of different ages and abilities. The modified building will be connected to the urban environment and include the necessary modifications of paved areas of public passenger transport, including the proposal of material. The course also includes an experiential seminar with the personal experience of each student, including mapping barrier-free accessibility according to pre-selected buildings and the urban environment. Overview of the lectures: 1. Introduction, getting to know the topic and the history of creating barrier-free environments in the Czech Republic and abroad, legal environment, requisites of project documentation. 2. Basic concepts and principles of creating a barrier-free environment from the point of view of people with mobility, visual, hearing, mental or combined disabilities or restrictions. Seven principles of universal design. 3. Experiential seminar according to the types of disabilities. 4. Design of connecting structures in terms of accessibility of buildings (stairs, elevators, platforms, escalators and walkways, barrier-free ramps). 5. The peculiarities of the design of sanitary facilities and changing rooms according to the types of buildings. 6. Methodology of designing barrier-free use of civic facility (public administration, cultural objects, sports facilities, schools and school facilities, accommodation facilities, hospitals, buildings for transport). 7. Methodology of residential buildings and special purpose apartments design. Buildings for the performance of work of persons with a serious health disability. 8. Universal design in the design of the urban environment (paved areas, parking spaces, roads, public transport stops by type of means of transport). Tactile and visual contrast materials. Seminars overview: 1. Connecting structures in terms of accessibility of buildings (stairs, elevators, platforms, escalators and walkways, barrier-free ramps). 2. Sanitary facilities and changing rooms. 3. Civic facility according to assignment. 4. Special purpose apartments and adaptable apartments. 5. Urban environment. 6. Mapping of buildings.
