The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the issue of building failures and reconstruction of buildings, mostly with focus on historic and structural survey including diagnostics. The lectures deal mainly with issues of building failures, their symptoms and reconstructions of historic buildings. Lecture topics: 1. Introduction to the issue, legislative framework 2. Diagnostics - devices, survey methodology Construction historical surveys, iconography, "historical decay of the building", technical solutions of historical structures and material composition of structures of the given period, traditional production and processing procedures. 3. Construction technical surveys - field surveys, laboratory analyses, causes of failures and interacting influences 4. Degradation processes 5. Transport of moisture in structures, sources and causes of increased humidity, the effect of moisture on the material properties and building construction 6. Historic technologies and measures of protection of buildings against humidity 7. Defects and reconstruction of masonry structures 8. Defects and reconstruction of foundation structures, geological and hydrogeological survey 9. Defects and reconstruction of wooden buildings, biodegradation, wood-destroying fungi, wood-destroying insects 10. Defects and reconstruction of vaults 11. Microclimate of historical buildings 12. - 13. Surveys and reconstructions of important historical buildings - case studies
