Course content
1. The history and overview of building materials. The influence of the golden section and its application. 2. The basic fields of construction production. Module-related coordination of dimensions. The structural systems of buildings and their classification. 3. Engineering-geological survey of a building site and the types of earthworks. Securing foundation pits, the footing bottom and the depth of foundations. Area-based and depth-based foundations. Differences between a building with a basement and a building without a basement. 4. An education tour to a building site. 5. Vertical load-bearing and non-load-bearing structures and categorisation of materials. The basic types of connections for masonry and stone. Reinforcing collars and beam ties. 6. The functions of horizontal structures. Ceiling structures, including a vault; a front, a projecting and a receding structure. The basic types of a wooden ceiling, a ceiling made of reinforced concrete, a ceramic ceiling and a steel ceiling. 7. The basic functions and requirements of connection structures. Classification of stairways and descriptions of their individual parts. Calculation of a stairway space. Ladders and climbing-irons. Inclined ramps, platforms, elevators and escalators. 8. Basic requirements for roofs; the classification of roof structures; gradients and geometric shapes. Structural systems of roof structures. 9. Roof trusses; the descriptions of their individual elements and the basic saddle of a roof truss. Designs of roof planes in simple examples. 10. Chimneys and revision of the covered curriculum. 11. Test. 12. Construction documents and construction drawings. Types of lines and their usage. 13. Surveying the classroom; drawing a ground plan and a cross section view in the scale of 1:50. 14. Final test.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing)
  • Class attendance - 28 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 28 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Basics of the civil engineering field for new students of the Faculty of Arts and Architecture. Introduction to the topic, introduction to basic concepts. Topics: 1. Classification of building structures. Basic building materials and professions. 2. Basic parts of buildings and their terminology. 3. Basics of drawing building structures, reading building drawings. 4. Stages of project preparation of constructions. 5. Analysis of the building and division of load-bearing structures: construction site, groundworks, terrain structures, foundation structures, structures above the foundations, vertical load-bearing structures, load-bearing structures of ceilings, chimneys and vents.
The student will understand the basic segments of building activities. He will able to use fundamental professional terminology and methods of engineering drawing.
Prerequisites
